Soil Association rebukes Paterson’s GM claims

The Soil Association promotes organic farming
The Soil Association has reacted to a speech made by Owen Paterson MP showing his support for GM farming research in the UK. The organisation’s policy director Peter Melchett described the Environment Secretary’s proposal as a ‘GM dream [that] will make it harder to feed the world’, and that would more helpful to Western big business that those in need in developing nations.
20 June 2013 – Ahead of Owen Paterson’s speech, 20 June 2013, Soil Association Policy Director Peter Melchett comments: “Owen Paterson’s GM dream will make it harder to feed the world. The British Government constantly claim that GM crops are just one tool in the toolbox for the future of farming. In fact GM is the cuckoo in the nest. It drives out and destroys the systems that international scientists agree we need to feed the world. We need farming that helps poorer African and Asian farmers produce food, not farming that helps Bayer, Syngenta and Monsanto produce profits.”
